Glückliches Neues Jahr!!
  • trektech January 2
Happy new year tutors and fellow students. I'm looking forward to another year of progress in my language studies. I thought it might be good practice to start a discussion listing our resolutions in German. I am a beginner student so please forgive my mistakes and feel free to offer corrections where needed.

    1. Ich will, Gewicht zu verlieren (I want to lose weight)
    2. Ich möchte im Lotto gewinnen (I want to win the lottery)
    3. Ich möchte Mittelstufe Deutsch sprechen (I want to speak intermediate level German)
Ok... the lottery is more a wish than a goal but I'm sure it's realistic since no one else probably has the same wish :-)

You'd say "Frohes Neues Jahr", not glückliches.

    1. Ich möchte Gewicht verlieren, or, more common: Ich möchte abnehmen.

    2. Looks good.

    3. Mittelstufe means school classes 5-10. You want to use "fortgeschritten", as in: Ich möchte fortgeschrittenes Deutsch sprechen.

    HTH,

    Chris (native speaker)
  • Danke, Chris! Trektech, don't forget that abnehmen is one of those separable prefix verbs. So if you're in the process of sticking to your resolution, you'd say:

    Ich nehme ab.

And check out the adjective ending on fortgeschritten. You can figure out that Deutsch is neuter because of the ending -es.

If you like German grammar (sounds odd, I know), analyzing sentences is a good way to help you figure out what's going on, and why.

    Hi trektech,

Vielen Dank  for using our message board!

Here is my new year's resolution in German:

    1. Ich möchte mehr Deutsch unterrichten.
    2. Ich wünsche mir mehr Schüler für unsere E-Sessions.
    3. Ich möchte meinen Mann zwingen gesünder zu essen.

Hope to see you in one of our German sessions.

    Viele Grüße,
    Seval

Ja ja, ich mochte fortgeschrittenes Deutsch sprechen auch!!!  UND ICH WILL!!! :)

    1. Seval, was ist das: unterrichten?  To teach?

    2. Wunsche ist: wish?  Wish more students would use e-sessions?

    3. You want your husband to eat zwinger gesunder?  Was ist das?

    Bis bald!

    Monroe:

    1. unterrichten is to teach, yes.
    2. wünsche is first person singular of wünschen, to wish, so yes.
    3. She/He wants to force her/his husband to eat more healthily. Jemanden "zwingen" means to "force" sb.; "gesünder" is "more healthy".

From the non-native Chris: I think you mean UND ICH WERDE! Wollen (ich will...) is want, not will. The future auxiliary is werden (ich werde, du wirst, er/sie/es wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie/Sie werden).

Ich lerne Deutsch. (I learn/am learning German.)
Ich werde Deutsch lernen. (I will learn German.)
Ich will Deutsch lernen. (I want to learn German.)

But as in English, the regular old present tense is often used to mean a future action.

But I'm not sure if you just say "und ich werde" like we say "and I will." It might be something like "und das werde ich (tun)!" or something. I'm guessing, though. Chris/Seval?
