How to Say You're Sick in Portuguese

When traveling to Brazil or any other Portuguese speaking country, whether you’re going on vacation or business, it’s important to review basic phrases for saying hello, getting around, asking for directions, making reservations, shopping and other essential expressions that make a trip run smoothly and show your interest in the culture and country you’re visiting. 

And although most people plan for fun and adventure, it’s also important to prepare for the possibility of getting sick. 

Here are some key expressions that will help you in the off chance you need them:

Eu preciso de um médico. I need a doctor.

Eu gostaria de falar com um clínico geral. I’d like to talk to a GP. 

Onde fica o pronto-socorro? Where’s the emergency room?

Eu gostaria de marcar  uma consulta com o médico. I’d like to make an appointment with the doctor.

Eu gostaria de consultar um especialista. I’d like to see a specialist. 

Eu preciso de um dentista. I need a dentist. 

É urgente! It’s urgent. 

Estou com dor de cabeça. I have a headache.

Estou com febre. I have a fever.

Estou com dor de dente. I have a toothache.

Estou com dor de barriga. I have a stomachache.

Eu torci o calcanhar. I sprained my ankle.

Eu acho que quebrei o braço. I think I broke my arm.

Eu tenho alergia à amendoim. I have a peanut allergy.

Sou alérgico à penicilina. I’m allergic to penicillin. 

Eu cortei o dedo / o pé. I cut my finger / foot.

Eu fui picado por um inseto / uma cobra. I was bitten by an insect / a snake. 

Tome esse remédio de três em três horas. Take this medicine every three hours.

Descanse por alguns dias. Rest for some days.

Fique na cama por dois dias. Stay in bed for a couple for days.

Volte aqui daqui a uma semana. Come back in a week.

Precisamos fazer um raio X. We need an x-ray.

Precisamos fazer um RM (ressonância magnética). We need an MRI scan.
