Redes sociais no Brasil: amar? gostar? ou curtir? Social Media in Brazil: love, like, enjoy?

In rede sociais, social media, in Brazil curtir is the word of choice when you “like” something.

Curtir originally means to prepare leather or animal skin to be used in the garment industry or to tan. A more modern version of this verb has been used colloquially to express feeling pleasure in doing something or simply to like someone or something. The noun is curtida(s), like(s).

Look at these examples:

Eu curto muito música popular brasileira. I really enjoy Brazilian popular music.

Nós saímos de férias, mas não deu para curtir muito porque o tempo não estava bom. We took a vacation, but we didn’t enjoy it much because of bad weather.

Now, look at these other examples in social media:

Quantas curtidas você recebeu na foto que você postou? How many likes did you get in the picture you posted?

A minha postagem recebeu mais de cem curtidas. My post got more that one hundred likes.

Amar, to love, is also used in social media to say you love something. For example, when you see a picture of a place, someone or something you really like, you can comment: amo! meaning I love this!

Here are some examples of the verb amar, to love, or the noun amor, love used to express love in general.

Eu amo os meus país. I love my parents

Nós nos amamos desde o dia em que nos conhecemos. We’ve loved each other since the day we met.

O amor é cego. Love is blind.

Gostar which is the literal translation of the verb to like in English isn’t used as much in social media, but it’s always worth reviewing this verb that is always used with the preposition de.

Gostar de is used when you like something in general. For example:

Ela gosta de esquiar. She likes to ski

Todo mundo gosta de pizza. Everybody likes pizza.

However, if you like something specific, you have to use an article before the noun, so the preposition de becomes do, da, dos or das. Look at the following examples:

Eu gosto da pizza da minha avó. I like my grandmother’s pizza.

Vocês gostam das praias do Rio de Janeiro? Do you like the beaches in Rio de Janeiro?

Ela não gosta do carro novo. She doesn’t like the new car.

Nós gostamos dos nossos amigos. We like our friends.
