Accented letters? Make a list!

edited June 2013 in Portuguese
To practice different symbols that mark stress or change vowel sounds, it is a good idea to practice with lists that will make it easier for you to remember what each symbol represents.Let's start with the agudo, or acute accent. This accent does two important things: Changes the pronunciation of the vowels e and o; and shows that the stress falls on that syllable. The accented e is pronounced like the e in best. The accented o is pronounced like the o in off: café coffee até / until médico / doctor nós we escritório / office / avó /grandmother.  Can you find others? Put them all together and practice saying them out loud. For more go to page 11 of the Essential Brazilian Portuguese.
