Review the Verb Gostar, to Like, and Take a Quiz

edited September 2016 in Portuguese

The Portuguese verb gostar, to like, is used with the preposition de when it’s followed by another verb or when it’s used to mean you like something in general.

For example: Eu gosto de esquiar. I like to ski. / Ele não gosta de neve. He doesn’t like snow (in general).

When gostar is used to refer to something specific the preposition de agrees in number and gender with what is liked.

For example: Nós gostamos das praias do norte. We like the beaches in the north. Vocês gostam dos livros do Paulo Coelho? Do you like Paulo Coelho’s books?

When referring to a geographical place, use gostar de when the place doesn’t take an article and use gostar de contracted with the article when the place requires one.

For example: Eu gosto de São Paulo, mas eu não gosto do Rio de Janeiro. I like São Paulo, but I don’t like Rio de Janeiro.
