Essential expressions

Pronunciation of ü and ch

German has a few sounds that will be unfamiliar to an English speaker.

ü tschüss, küssen
ch mach’s gut

The vowel sound ü in tschüss is pronounced a little like i in kiss, but with the lips rounded as when you’re pronouncing oo in food. The sound ch in mach’s gut is a bit similar to the k sound in luck, but you need to keep pressing the air out, rather than stopping it abruptly.

German Greetings

Here are some different kinds of greetings in German:

guten Morgen good morning
guten Abend good evening
guten Tag good day
auf Wiedersehen good-bye

Here are a few less formal greetings:

hallo hi
tschüss bye
mach’s gut take care
